Close-Boarded
Sloping Site
A set of hardwood gates, supplied and fitted by TPS on a gently sloping site. The gates inorporated a postbox built into one leaf (see details below) and the mechanism was an underground automation unit.

These gates are required to open at different angles, one at 90 degrees and the other at approximately 160 degrees. The posts incorporate light fittings and entry is by a remote key fob unit.
Chevron Gates This set of hardwood gates were supplied and fitted by TPS - note the distinctive chevron pattern of the timbers and the site gently sloping to the left. The gates were made to fit an existing opening with adjacent stone pillars and the pavier driveway was partially taken up to run the electrical wiring and then carefully replaced. These gates open at differing angles, one at 90 degress and the other at 180 degrees. All TPS gates incorporate full safety features but at the request of the client, additional safety features were fitted, including a push button emergency stop and other child-safety measures. Our engineers will be pleased to explain the safety features of all our installations and make any amendments to suit individual client requirements.
Intercom Entry

Your gate automation can incorporate the latest technology in access control.

Here there is a keypad with an intercom link into the house so that visitors can request entry. This can also be combined with a cctv image (not illustrated). The keypads may be mounted on existing pillars as here, or free standing at a convenient height for access from a car.

Gates can also be controlled by a ground loop system (activated automatically by the approach of a vehicle fitted with a corresponding activator), key fobs or swipe cards, even number plate recognition, or by GSM telephone, giving you control of your gates from whevever you are.
Articulated Opening
An existing set of gates automated using the articulated arm method, as opposed to underground automation. The gates and pillars had been in situ for some time and this method of automation minimises groundworks and hence costs. Note the cut-outs carefully made in the brick pillars to accommoadte the closing mechanism.

Hardwood or Softwood?

Wooden gates are of either hardwood or softwood construction, with softwood being, on average, 50% cheaper. Both types require treating regularly, both to protect them and keep them looking at their best but in general, hardwood gates should require less maintenance and will have a longer life. Softwood gates can be prone to warp or twist due to the effects of weathering and usage and for that reason we prefer to fit them with a metal frame to increase rigidity and lifespan. However, in addition to being cheaper, softwood gates do offer ecological advantages which customers may prefer.

In order to keep your gates looking their best at all times, we offer a gate staining option as part of our annual service.
Sliding or Opening?

Virtually all types of gate can be offered with an opening or a sliding mechanism. Sliding gates are generally more secure as they have a fixed housing at both ends and are ideal where gates cannot open into a sloping driveway. They are also better for windy sites.

Sliding Gates are normally mounted on a rail which supports its weight along the entire length of its run and can thefefore span quite wide openings. They have to be mounted on a level surface and the guide rail must be kept clear of debris. Some horse owners prefer not to have the bottom rail.

Sliding or Opening?
In those circumstances where a bottom rail is either not suitable, or specifically not requested, we can install a cantilever sliding gate. This is effectively suspended over the entrance and therefore needs no rail below it. The basic principle uses an additional section of gate to partly counterbalance the section that spans the roadway. Cantilevers need less groundwork, are quieter in operation and can be used on uneven ground. However they require more space at the side of the gate to accommodate the extra length and are less suitable for very wide openings.
